TikTok has recently become the place where people go to talk about what’s on their minds. Sometimes to a fault. (Hey, social media was never meant to be a magical place).
It’s become quite common to see debates break out across the TikTok-verse and a recent discussion sparked quite the uproar. Apparently, skinny jeans and side parts are out. Well, at least according to Gen Z — the generation practically asking for la chancla.
Millennials and Generation Xers (ehem, people like us here in Latina Moms) are responding to the younger Gen Zers who are mocking them (us) for wearing skinny jeans and side parts on TikTok. The generational battle between the two groups continues to rage on the popular social media platform with Gen Z fueling the fire with their recent condemnation of the skinny jeans, beloved by millennials and Generation X (again, most of us).
Some Gen Zers have posted TikToks stating they’d rather be dead or homeless than be caught wearing skinny jeans (eye roll), but we are not giving up the discussion.
The question is: Are these fashion staples many of us swear by really over? The short answer is “no.”
Been there, done that
Gen Z has made great strides when it comes to social justice matters. There’s no denying that. However, fashion is a separate matter. Fashion comes and goes and, boy, do we know it. So, they have not really created any new trend, they have imitated it!
And yes, skinny jeans, side parts, crop tops, and scrunchies may not look appealing to the younger crowd (now), but please be reminded that Gen Zers didn’t come up with the middle part hair, it was Wednesday Addams (yes, from the Adams Family in 1930), and the flare jeans and cropped tops have been in since the 60’s and 70’s. Nothing new here.
Fashion, like we say it in Spanish “de la moda, lo que te acomoda” , exists to complement a personal style, or whatever works for your lifestyle.
In conclusion, everyone is entitled to wear a trend that makes them feel comfortable and confident, rather than insecure and stiff just because it is “in”.
And the skinny jeans? They are definitely not out, they are very much in! We have spent countless months after giving birth to get skinny enough to flaunt our figure and curves, so we are not giving up on those, sorry!
