Halloween Chicken “Boodle” Soup

Nothing is more comforting and delicious than homemade chicken soup. With that in mind, we give you this amazing Halloween version of the traditional “sopita de pollo!” from Notas de Mamá’s Carla Gutierrez. In her own words:

Personally, I prefer very simple seasoning. I like the taste of chicken and vegetables to come through, just like I remember my grandma’s soup. However, like with any soup, you can make it your own and add your favorite ingredients, and seasoning.

What is most important about this soup is to surprise your little ones with soup, overflowing with bats and pumpkin.  Enjoy!

  • chicken breasts
  • carrots
  • cups farfalle pasta
  • food coloring, black
  • cups chicken broth
  • cup celery, chopped
  • 1/4 
  • garlic claves
  • 1 tsp 


  1. Dice the chicken breasts and boil them in 4 cups of water. Remove and separate the broth for later use. If desired you can use precooked chicken and box broth.

  2. To form the pumpkins peel the carrots and cut them into smaller pieces. For the stem do four minor cuts in the middle of the carrot, as the picture indicates. Once you can see the stem, you can slice the whole carrot and tadaa! Pumpkins!

  3. Cook the pasta according to package instructions, until al dente. It should not be too soft. Let it cool.

  4. Add 10 to 15 drops of the black food coloring. Mix the pasta carefully so that it does not break. Let the pasta stand for a few minutes in the dye. Rinse the pasta with cold water until the water comes out clear.

  5. In a saucepan, add the chicken broth, chopped celery, garlic, onion, carrot, chicken, and salt to taste. Let the broth boil and cook the vegetables.

  6. Once ready, serve on a plate and add the pasta. The pasta should be added at the end since the dye could tinge the soup. Serve the soup immediately.
