Osteoporosis and Motherhood, What You Need To Know

Did you know that osteoporosis is most prevalent in women? Some women, however, are more predisposed to this condition, such as Mexican-American women. In some rare cases, women who are pregnant can develop osteoporosis. 

You should know, though, that becoming a mother does deplete your bone’s health plenty. This is why it’s important to stay on top of everything relating to your health and body. 

Now, amigas, if you are experiencing signs of osteoporosis or have been diagnosed already, take it easy. Sure, at first, that may come as a shock, but you need to think about what this means to our most important role in life: being a mother. 

Living with osteoporosis is said to be manageable. But here’s what you need to know when it comes to managing it aside from motherhood.

Calcium 

Make sure you take your daily vitamins, but most importantly, your intake of calcium is boosted. You can also obtain your dosage for your calcium from everyday items. For example, drinking reduced-fat milk, other dairies, and leafy greens can increase your calcium intake. 

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is also vital for women’s bone health. After all, vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium, hence helping your bones out some more. Sure, sunlight is the natural source of vitamin D, but you can also try incorporating egg yolks, mushrooms, and cod liver oil into your diet. If not, vitamin D supplements also exist – just make sure you consult your doctor beforehand.

Exercise

There are plenty of exercises that work towards the well-being of your bone health. Some of these exercises include jump roping and running. Try to partake in these exercises at least three times a week or as directed by your doctor. 

Overall, just remember that osteoporosis and motherhood is something that can be taken care of.
