Garage sales may not have been something you considered doing in the past. Particularly in our Latino families, we just hand down clothes that no longer fit us or items we no longer need to other family members.
We typically consider donating before selling. However, this does not mean we should not entertain the idea of a garage sale. What if you have a very valuable item such as a wireless keyboard and mouse set that you can no longer use because it’s incompatible with your new computer?
Or, what if your primas creidas only like to wear name-brand clothing and not your more affordable items from places like H&M and Ross?
It is in these cases that you realize that you can still make a profit out of things you can personally no longer use.
It’s time to declutter your home in Marie Kondo style and only keep things that bring you joy.
Here are some tips for having the most efficient garage sale in history.
Clean Out Your Closet
Don’t wait until the last minute to browse through your house and see what items could be sold. Truly take the time to clean out your closet and start separating items you put up for sale.
What’s even better is that this will also help you throw away things that are just cluttering up your space, such as old receipts stashed away in your purses, stained clothing, old prescription glasses, or anything with holes in it (we know this happens).
Clear Pricing Labels
Have you ever been to the store and looked at something that caught your eye but couldn’t find the price of it? You more than likely put the item back on the shelf because you do not want to go through the hassle of asking how much it costs.
If you don’t label your items clearly and concisely and in a manner that stands out, you could potentially miss out on selling things during your garage sale.
It doesn’t have to be an elaborate labeling system either. You can go to the dollar store, buy color-coded sticker labels, and write the price with a black permanent marker. You can also buy preprinted labels for even more convenience.
Advertise
It’s important to advertise your garage sale. You can’t leave it to the mere chance that someone is driving by your neighborhood and sees a sign with the information. Post it on your social media. Post online ads, hang flyers in your community center, post on Facebook garage sale groups, and have your friends share it with their followers as well.
This way, your sale will reach various audiences and have a better turnout. In addition, make sure that you post clear directions and dates, so people do not get confused.
Organization is Key
Just because you are trying to get rid of all this stuff, don’t treat it like garbage. Believe it or not, these items can bring value to someone else. Therefore, don’t just throw clothing into a large bin for customers to sort through.
Actually, take the time to organize your items neatly and carefully. It will be aesthetically pleasing and help potential customers find things they need more easily, thus creating the perfect environment for a successful sale.
