So Your Child Wants a Dog? Five Benefits of Having a Furry Sibling in the House

Posted by Latina Moms in Family, Parenting on 08/30/22

Your kid wants a dog Latina Moms

“Everything I know, I learned from dogs,” Nora Roberts famously said. Dogs have been dubbed as “man’s best friend,” and this is not surprising in the least bit.

The internet is filled with thousands of them. People take so many photos of their dogs when they are sleeping in a cute position or record them anytime they start having “zoomies” around the house.

Furry friends are an indispensable part of many people’s lives, bringing that feeling of love and companionship that so many of us yearn for. They are loyal and will stand by your side in both the good and bad times. It’s a feeling that is indescribable, but truly, dogs love their “pawrents” wholeheartedly.

But, when your child asks for a dog, you may feel skeptical as they may not fully comprehend all the responsibility of taking care of a dog. You may feel like it will become something else to do in your already busy lifestyle.

However, why would you not want to add this extra love to your child’s life?

Before you decide to get them a goldfish, here are some benefits to having a furry sibling in the house that may help you change your mind.

They feel more supported

Having a dog can help your children feel more supported. Especially for only-children, the journey can quickly become lonely because they end up playing alone most of the time. However, having a dog adds a trusty companion to your child’s life, having someone they can play with or simply cuddle with after a long day of kindergarten.

They make children more active

Dogs are filled with an incredible amount of energy, always ready to play catch or fetch a frisbee. Their energetic spirit will push your children to participate in a more active lifestyle by going on more frequent walks, playing outside, and just enjoying the great outdoors.

They learn to be responsible

While it is essential for you always to supervise your children while they are tending to your pets, having a dog teaches children how to have a sense of responsibility. They will understand that without them filling their bowls, their best friend would never be able to eat their kibble or drink water.

They will start to associate how their behavior affects the well-being of their furry sibling. As a result, this will trickle on to other aspects of their life, such as cleaning their room or brushing their teeth.

They help your children feel safe

Having an unconditional companion will create a feeling of security for your child. Dogs have a spectacular sixth sense, being able to hear and smell things humans would never catch on to. They start barking when someone rings the doorbell; they become alert when someone unknown approaches you, and they can even sense when bad weather is coming.

When your children realize all these abilities, they will start feeling even more protection, providing them with a sense of security that is crucial for their development.

They make your children happy

At the end of the day, what one should seek as a parent is the happiness of your children. Dogs bring such an incredible amount of joy to the household that you will never not see your children happy with them.

You will witness firsthand how they become best friends and fill your home with laughter.
