Flag Day Etiquette: Do’s And Don’ts

Jun 14, 2016

For over 30 years, we honor the Nation’s symbol on Flag Day (June 14) and celebrate the hope it inspires in the American people. Care and handling of the American flag is steeped in tradition and respect, so always follow appropriate flag etiquette when displaying the flag. Here are a few tips on how you can (respectfully) observe the patriotism of the day.

  1. Flag Do's

    1. Fly your flag from sunrise to sunset.
    2. Make sure to raise the flag briskly and lower it ceremoniously.
    3. Only display the flag at night when it is properly lighted.
    4. When the flag is displayed on a car, the staff shall be fixed firmly to the right fender.
    5. In a window or suspended on a wall, the flag should hang with the union on the viewer’s left.
  2. Flag Don'ts

    1. Never fly the flag in rain or bad weather.
    2. During lowering, never allow any part of the flag touch the ground or any other object.
    3. When ready for storing the flag, don’t just stuff the flag in a drawer or box. Make sure to properly fold it.
