Prosecco, Champagne Or Cava: Bubbly Explained
Unlike champagne, which hails from France, Cava wine comes from Spain, mostly produced in the Catalonia region. While it comes from a different country, Cava “is made in the same way that Champagne is, which is different from sparkling wines injected with carbonation rather than letting the ingredients naturally ferment.” Cava is made from macabeo, parellada or xarel-lo grapes, which are all native to Spain (don’t worry if you’ve never heard of them). Cava is typically lighter in taste than champagne, which can be quite rich, so if you’re looking for a refreshing bubbly, this might be your best bet. Another perk: cava is often cheaper than champagne — you can get a delicious bottle of cava for as little as $15.
