Ever wonder why you look radiant and glowing in certain colors and washed out in others? Well, the answer lies in your undertone (that color beneath your skin’s surface). Much like makeup and hair, figuring out what color palette best flatters you starts with your skin tone – which can be grouped into three categories: warm, cool, and neutral.

So how do you determine whether you’re warm, cool or neutral? We have a couple of easy tricks. First, turn your hand over, palm up, taking a peek at the veins on the underside of your wrist. If they look blue or purple, you’re cool toned. If they look green or have a yellow cast, you’re warm toned. Still confused? Try the jewelry test. Think about whether you look better in silver or gold jewelry (not which you like more, but which actually makes you look more radiant, glowing, and awake.) Typically, girls with cool undertones look better in silver and platinum metals, and warm-toned women look better in gold.

Now that you figured out your perfect undertone, read on for what colors work best for your complexion. From deep turquoises to soft lilacs, find the hues that are bound to give your skin (and your wardrobe) a colorful revamp!

  1. warm

If you have warm undertones, you’re in the company of bronzed beauties like Jessica Alba, JLo and the Queen Bey herself! Your skin tends to have golden undertones and your skin can be anywhere from medium with yellow undertones, pale peach or dark. Warm tones’ hair might be light brown, red, dark brown or strawberry blonde and your eye color tends to be light blue, gray-green, blue-green, or cool brown. While peachy pinks and corals, compliment your complexion, more earthy autumn shades like deep red and copper, emerald  green, and creamy taupe really look radiant on you!

  2. cool

Are you in the cool category? Take color cues from other “cools” including Cameron Diaz, Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett. Your skin tends to have blue, red or pink undertones and your skin can be pale white, olive or dark. Your hair color can be dark brown, black or natural blonde and your eye color tends to be amber, dark brown, blue or green. Because your skin has reddish, pink or blue undertones, you will look great in colors that reflect these tones! Go for a color palette that includes aquamarine blues, soft lilacs, rich lavenders and soft rose colors. Try to avoid orange, tomato red, and strong yellows, which can clash with your skin completely.

  3. neutral

If your tones lands in the neutral zone – consider yourself lucky! You can basically rock any color and look fab! Look to celebs like Taylor Swift and Julianne Moore for your color inspiration. Neutral skins are boosted with some touch of pink, both warm and cool, especially in the blush-pink range. As a neutral, you can wear anything on the color wheel — but it’s typically best to go for softened or muted versions of a color instead of the brighter ones. While overly saturated colors like magenta and bright blue can overwhelm your neutral skin tone, a vibrant, true red (think blue-ish red) will pop on you!
