Meet Laurie Hernandez – The Latina Phenom On The Road To Rio!
The freshest face on the 2016 Olympic team, 16-year-old Laurie Hernandez is already making history on the U.S. women’s gymnastics team, and she hasn’t even arrived to Rio de Janeiro yet! Known as “baby Shakira”, this Puerto Rican athlete became the first U.S.-born Latina to make the team in thirty years, the third Latina in history to make the team and the first Boricua.
A rising star on the team due to her charismatic personality and solid performances on the balance beam, Laurie is proud to be able to represent her Latina roots. “I feel I could be a role model to other Hispanic gymnasts interested in the sport but I also want them to understand the importance of being focused, determined, and not giving up, despite all the struggles. I don’t think that limits you to anything. I think everyone should just go for what they want.”
Watch out, Rio – this sassy sensation is a force to be reckoned with!
